New Orleans’ Solomon Burke, 36, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for violations of the Federal Controlled Substances Act. The charges stem from an alleged possession with intent to distribute heroin and marijuana.
On February 1, 2023, before U.S. District Court Judge Jane Triche Milazzo, Burke admitted to the crime. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years for the heroin and 5 years for the marijuana, along with fines reaching $1 million and $250,000 respectively.
The sentencing is set for April 25, 2023, following which Burke will also be required to pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in the area.
Investigations were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department, with prosecution led by Unit Chief Elizabeth Privitera and Assistant Unit States Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu Jr. This case underscores the commitment to community safety and strategic enforcement priorities under PSN’s framework.
The sentencing comes as a significant blow to the drug trade in New Orleans, showcasing the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts. The community is hopeful that such actions will lead to safer neighborhoods and a reduction in violent crime.
