Matthew W. Miller, Unlawful Ammunition Possession, Nebraska 2024

Omaha’s gritty federal court scene saw Matthew W. Miller, 36, from Weeping Water, Nebraska, face the music for his unlawful ammunition possession. Today, United States Attorney Steven Russell announced the sentencing of Miller to a robust 37-month term behind bars.

The sentence, handed down by United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher, ensures no parole in the federal system. Upon his release from prison, Miller will be subjected to a further 3-year term of supervised release, locking him away from society for over five years for this heinous offense.

Miller’s crime spree began on August 10, 2021, when law enforcement caught him red-handed pawning Winchester .357 ammunition at Sol’s Pawn Shop in Omaha. His fingerprints were on the pawn ticket, and photographs confirmed his involvement. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) later verified that all ammunition was manufactured outside of Nebraska’s borders.

Miller has a lengthy rap sheet, with multiple felony convictions under his belt, including theft in Douglas and Washington counties, burglary in Douglas County, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, also in Douglas County. His latest conviction for ammunition possession is yet another black mark on his criminal record.

This case was the result of a collaborative investigation between the Omaha Police Department and the ATF, showcasing law enforcement’s commitment to upholding the gun laws that protect our communities.

Miller’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by felons who continue to threaten public safety with illegal firearm possession. His sentence will undoubtedly serve as a deterrent for others contemplating similar actions.
