Felony Felon’s Fentanyl Empire Crumbles

Shawndell Johnson, 32, a Melbourne resident, has pleaded guilty to a string of serious crimes, including distribution of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. Johnson’s crime spree has earned him a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years, up to life, in federal prison.

According to court documents, Johnson’s troubles began in September 2022 when he twice distributed fentanyl to a confidential source. The following year, in March 2023, Johnson was arrested on state charges stemming from his fentanyl distribution. A subsequent search of his residence revealed a staggering cache of illicit substances, including hundreds of grams of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, as well as digital scales, drug processing materials, and a substantial amount of cash – over $30,000.

Agents also discovered two firearms and ammunition in Johnson’s residence, a clear violation of federal law given his prior convictions, including murder in the third degree without design and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. As a previously convicted felon, Johnson is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.

The case against Johnson was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Florida Highway Patrol, and the Rockledge Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Megan Testerman is handling the prosecution.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence, and making our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy in 2021, strengthening PSN by fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

The plea deal serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in illicit activities, particularly for those with prior convictions. Johnson’s actions not only put himself at risk but also endangered the lives of others in his community.
