Hustler Desjarlait Sentenced to Federal Lockup for Robbery Attempt on Red Lake Reservation
In a gritty Minnesota federal court, Edward Desjarlait, 27, from Ponemah, received an 18-month sentence for his brazen attempt to rob a residence within the Red Lake Indian Reservation boundaries.
On September 24, 2022, Desjarlait, armed with an unloaded rifle and under the influence of criminal intent, pounded on the front door of a residential property. His demand was bold yet ominous: “Give me all of your [expletive].” With a lock standing between him and his goal, Desjarlait made a hasty retreat without so much as a single item from the residence.
More than a year later, on February 5, 2024, Desjarlait pleaded guilty to one count of attempted robbery. The courtroom was no match for his conviction; on June 5, 2024, Judge Joan N. Ericksen sentenced him to serve time in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay $500 in restitution.
This case was the culmination of a relentless investigation led by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department, with invaluable assistance from the U.S. Border Patrol and the FBI.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily A. Polachek handled the prosecution, ensuring justice was served for the attempted robbery that terrorized the Red Lake community.
