DES MOINES, Iowa – Douglas Harsh, 55, of Adel, Iowa, is headed to federal prison for nine years after being sentenced on Friday, September 5, 2025, to 108 months for the transportation of child pornography. The sentence, handed down in federal court, reflects the severity of the crimes and sends a clear message: exploiting children will not be tolerated.
The case unfolded after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children flagged a CyberTip, indicating that an online account linked to Harsh had received files depicting the sexual abuse of children. Investigators quickly zeroed in on Harsh, and a search of his Adel residence yielded a trove of electronic devices containing the horrific material. The evidence painted a disturbing picture of a man actively engaged in a depraved online world.
Court documents reveal Harsh wasn’t just a receiver of this filth. He was an active participant, a member of a clandestine online chat group where members routinely shared images and videos of child pornography, including content featuring prepubescent children. The investigation revealed a network of individuals contributing to and consuming this abhorrent material, all shielded by the anonymity of the internet.
The sentence doesn’t end with Harsh’s release from prison. Upon completion of his 108-month term, he will face a seven-year term of supervised release, a constant reminder of his crimes. And, crucially, he’s been ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution, a small attempt to address the harm he’s inflicted. It’s important to note that there is no parole in the federal system – Harsh will serve the entirety of his sentence.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing, emphasizing the collaborative effort that brought Harsh to justice. The Federal Bureau of Investigation spearheaded the investigation, receiving vital assistance from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation Internet Crimes Against Children task force and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. This wasn’t a solo operation; it was a coordinated strike against online predators.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children online, and to rescue the victims.
