West Virginia Woman Sentenced to Prison for Lying to Obtain U.S. Citizenship
A West Virginia woman has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for naturalization fraud based on lies about her prior criminal conduct to obtain U.S. citizenship.
On September 22, 2023, Admira Ibrasimi, 55, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Bosnia and Herzegovina, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt for making false statements in her naturalization application in 2018.
According to the Department of Justice, Ibrisimi willfully made false statements about her prior criminal conduct in her naturalization application, which led to her obtaining U.S. citizenship.
The indictment charged Ibrisimi with naturalization fraud, specifically making false statements under oath or affirmation in her naturalization application.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kaylie Wang of the Northern District of Indiana handled the case for the government. The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Bloomington, Indiana.
The Department of Justice notes that Ibrisimi’s crimes are not limited to these charges, as she was involved in torture and war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina before coming to the United States.
