Airon L. Mitchell, Fentanyl Trafficking, Fort Wayne IN, 2023

FORT WAYNE, IN – Airon L. Mitchell, 24, is headed to federal prison for 7 and a half years after pleading guilty to pushing fentanyl and illegally packing a loaded 9mm. U.S. District Court Judge Holly A. Brady handed down the 90-month sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, on Thursday, marking a win for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Fort Wayne Police Department.

The bust went down in August 2021 when Fort Wayne cops were on the hunt for Mitchell, who was already wanted on an outstanding warrant. They spotted him hopping into a vehicle, dropping a bag in the center console as he did. That bag contained 195 blue pills later identified as fentanyl – enough to kill a lot of people. The warrant they were already looking to serve just got a whole lot more serious.

A subsequent raid of Mitchell’s residence turned up even more trouble. Investigators seized 193.8 grams of marijuana, a digital scale used for weighing drugs, and, crucially, a loaded 9mm handgun along with a 50-round drum magazine. As a convicted felon, Mitchell was already barred from owning any firearms or ammunition, turning the gun possession charge into a significant sentencing enhancer.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacey R. Speith successfully prosecuted the case, laying out the evidence that connected Mitchell to the fentanyl and the illegal weapon. The ATF took the lead on the investigation, with crucial support from the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana State Police Laboratory Division. The combined effort shows how local and federal agencies are working together to get these dangerous players off the streets.

Federal officials are framing the sentencing as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program emphasizes building trust with communities, supporting local anti-violence groups, and focusing enforcement efforts on the most pressing threats. This case, according to the Department of Justice, fits squarely within that strategy.

Mitchell’s 90-month sentence sends a clear message: trafficking deadly drugs and illegally possessing firearms will not be tolerated in Northern Indiana. The ATF and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana, led by U.S. Attorney Clifford D. Johnson, are committed to dismantling drug trafficking operations and keeping guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them, even as the agency’s budget and manpower remain consistently strained.
