Albert Lea Man Convicted of Sextortion and Child Pornography

A federal jury has found Travis Kyle Mayer, 32, of Albert Lea, guilty of multiple charges related to child sexual exploitation and sextortion.

The six-day trial, held before Judge Wilhelmina M. Wright, resulted in convictions on seven counts, including production and attempted production of child pornography, distribution of child pornography, possession of child pornography, receipt of child pornography, coercion and enticement of a minor, committing a felony offense involving a minor while required to register as a sex offender, and obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Mayer downloaded and received child pornography from a Russian-based child pornography distribution website in 2017. The following year, he sexually exploited a 15-year-old girl, using persuasion and coercion, to produce child pornography, which he then possessed and distributed. During this time, Mayer was required to register as a sex offender.

In an attempt to obstruct the administration of justice, Mayer requested a witness to testify falsely regarding the child sexual exploitation investigation between June 20, 2019, and October 11, 2019.

Mayer’s sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge, who will take into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Mayer faces up to life in prison.

The investigation into Mayer’s crimes was a joint effort between the FBI and the Albert Lea Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alexander D. Chiquoine and Joseph H. Thompson tried the case.

Travis Kyle Mayer will be sentenced at a later date, and his exact sentence will be determined then. The public is urged to remain vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity that may be related to child sexual exploitation.
