Albuquerque Man Gets 108 Months for Armed Bank Robbery
A federal judge recently handed down a lengthy prison sentence to an Albuquerque man caught in a brazen armed bank robbery.
Martin Huertta, 43, was sentenced to 108 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for his role in the March 30, 2016, robbery of a US Bank branch in Albuquerque.
According to court documents, Huertta and four co-defendants – Greg Miera, 51, Christian Herrera, 20, Christopher Gallegos, 33, and Isaiah Gallegos, 20 – were accused of pulling off the heist. The group allegedly threatened to shoot bank employees before making off with a stash of cash.
Three of Huertta’s co-defendants – Miera, Christopher Gallegos, and Herrera – have already pleaded guilty to their roles in the robbery. They face a statutory maximum penalty of 25 years in federal prison. Isaiah Gallegos, however, remains scheduled for trial, set to begin on April 24, 2017.
The Albuquerque office of the FBI and the Albuquerque Police Department led the investigation into the robbery. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Letitia C. Simms.
Charges in criminal complaints and indictments are merely accusations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
As Huertta faces the reality of his lengthy prison sentence, the community can breathe a sigh of relief that justice has been served. The brazen armed robbery, which shook the city to its core, has been brought to a close. But the city will be left to wonder – what drove these individuals to commit such a heinous crime?
