RALEIGH – A federal grand jury in Raleigh has returned a Superseding Indictment against ALI KHALESEH DEHGHAN, 35, of Wake County, North Carolina, charging him with two counts of alien in possession of a firearm and failure to comply with terms of supervised release. Additionally, LUIS JAVIER GORTAREZ-JIMENEZ, 24, from Mexico, faces charges of Illegal Reentry and Alien in Possession of Ammunition.
The indictment against DEHGHAN alleges violations of the supervised release terms, specifically through his arrest for Carrying a Concealed Firearm. It is further claimed that he possessed a firearm in February 2017 and again in February 2019, both incidents affecting commerce.
DEHGHAN could face up to 21 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and supervised release if convicted of the firearms charges. GORTAREZ-JIMENEZ, who has been previously deported, faces up to 12 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and supervised release for illegal reentry and ammunition possession.
Both cases are under investigation by ICE’s Enforcement Removal Operations and Homeland Security Investigations. The charges against the defendants are merely accusations; they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This is a grim reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal firearms and immigration violations, as federal authorities continue to crack down on such offenses.
