Alien Smuggler Gets 8 Months in Prison
A New York man has been sentenced to 8 months in prison after being found guilty of transporting aliens in the United States for financial gain.
Wanxiang Chen, 28, a Chinese national who was residing in Flushing, New York, was convicted of transporting two Chinese citizens who were in the country illegally. Chen had picked them up from the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in Hogansburg, New York, and was driving them to New York City when Border Patrol agents stopped his car in Fort Covington.
According to the evidence presented at trial, Chen had made three prior smuggling trips, transporting aliens from the casino to New York City in exchange for cash payments. Chen was arrested on August 11, 2015, and has been incarcerated since then.
Chen will now be turned over to immigration authorities for possible removal proceedings, as he himself was illegally in the United States. This case was investigated by the United States Border Patrol and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Collyer.
U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and U.S. Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent John C. Pfeifer made the announcement. Chen’s sentencing marks the latest development in a case that highlights the ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and smuggling in the North Country.
The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that individuals who engage in such activities can face. Chen’s sentence demonstrates that the U.S. government will not tolerate those who seek to profit from the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Hartunian emphasized the importance of the work being done by law enforcement agencies to combat human trafficking. ‘This case is a prime example of the critical work being done by our law enforcement partners to protect the public and uphold the law,’ he said.
