Amanda Lorraine Bobtail Bear Sentenced to 30 Months for First Degree Burglary

Aberdeen, SD – In a shocking turn of events, Amanda Lorraine Bobtail Bear, a 31-year-old woman from Little Eagle, South Dakota, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for First Degree Burglary. The sentencing took place on May 20, 2024, at the Aberdeen Federal Courthouse.

The case unfolded on April 1, 2023, when Bobtail Bear learned that a 12-year-old girl had kissed her 25-year-old brother-in-law. In a fit of rage, Bobtail Bear and several others, including her 14-year-old niece, broke into the 12-year-old girl’s Little Eagle home, which is located within the Standing Rock Reservation.

According to court documents, Bobtail Bear kicked the 12-year-old girl and encouraged her niece to ‘hit her some more!’ while the 12-year-old begged them to stop. The 12-year-old girl’s wheelchair-bound father was restrained by Bobtail Bear’s brother during the assault, preventing him from protecting his daughter. The 12-year-old girl sustained minor injuries.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court as opposed to State court. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem prosecuted the case on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Bobtail Bear was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after the sentencing. She will also serve four years of supervised release following her prison term and will pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of violent crime. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services led the investigation into the case.
