HARRISBURG, Pa. – In a shocking turn of events, Andre Hairston, a 34-year-old resident of Harrisburg, was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 20, 2016, on charges of being a convicted felon illegally in possession of four firearms, selling a stolen handgun, possession with the intent to distribute synthetic marijuana, and criminal conspiracy.
According to U.S. Attorney Peter Smith, the charges stem from the arrest of Hairston in July 2015, when he sold a stolen handgun. A further search of his vehicle led to the recovery of another stolen handgun. Further investigation uncovered two more stolen handguns and synthetic marijuana packaged for distribution.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations Violent Crimes Task Force, the Harrisburg Police Department, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Lower Paxton Township Police, and the Dauphin County Probation and Parole Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney William A. Behe.
This case was brought as part of the Violent Crime Reduction Partnership, a district-wide initiative to combat the spread of violent crime in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. The VCRP consists of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies working together to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who commit violent crimes.
It’s worth noting that indictments are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent until found guilty in court.
Hairston’s charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine for each firearm count. The drug counts carry a 20-year maximum term of imprisonment. The exact sentence will be determined by the Judge after considering the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
