A vicious punch to the face in a South Dakota prison cell in December 2022 landed a 37-year-old man from Mission behind bars for three years. Duane Rouillard, III, was in custody at the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Adult Correctional Facility in Todd County when he assaulted a corrections officer on the night of December 29, 2022.
Rouillard, who pleaded guilty on February 19, 2026, punched the officer multiple times in the head and face with a closed fist, leaving him battered and bruised. This brutal attack was the catalyst for a federal investigation by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, which ultimately led to Rouillard’s indictment by a federal grand jury in February 2023.
U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte sentenced Rouillard to time served, approximately three years and one month in custody, followed by three years of supervised release. The court also ordered Rouillard to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Rouillard was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, bringing an end to a long and grueling ordeal for the corrections officer and the community. Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuted the case, ensuring justice was served for those affected.
