Baltimore Felon Sentenced for Gun Possession
A Baltimore man has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison for violating his supervised release by being in possession of a firearm. Dwayne Purdie Jr., age 28, was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
Purdie was charged in connection with a suspected drug transaction on November 14, 2019, in a Baltimore alleyway. According to the plea agreement, Baltimore Police Department officers witnessed a male suspect and Purdie conduct a suspected drug transaction. As the officers approached, Purdie fled the scene on his bicycle.
During the chase, Purdie threw a clear bag containing small objects consistent with packaged drugs. Eventually, Purdie abandoned his bicycle and fled on foot, hiding behind a truck. A BPD officer apprehended him and found a loaded 9mm semi-automatic firearm, 13 rounds of ammunition, and two vials of cocaine under Purdie’s right pant leg.
A subsequent search of the area where Purdie threw the bag revealed a clear bag containing 51 vials and gel caps of cocaine, as well as 31 gel caps containing a fentanyl mixture. The amount and packaging of the drugs suggest they were intended for distribution rather than personal use.
Purdie’s prior felony conviction made him aware that he was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition. Acting United States Attorney Jonathan F. Lenzner praised the ATF and Baltimore Police Department for their work in the investigation.
Lenzner thanked Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James C. Tuomey and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon K. Moore for their efforts in prosecuting the case. The investigation was led by the Baltimore Police Department, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore Field Division.
The 57-month sentence is a result of Purdie’s violation of his supervised release. The term will be followed by three years of supervised release. This case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland.
