Bank Robber Sentenced to 11.5 Years in Prison
A Gastonia man has been sentenced to 11.5 years in prison for robbing a bank in Charlotte, North Carolina.
James McConnell, 48, robbed a BB&T branch at 9200 S. Tryon Street on April 11, 2012, making off with $505 in cash. McConnell walked into the branch and told the bank teller he had a gun and demanded $2,500 in large bills. The teller handed him $505 in small bills instead, and McConnell fled with the money.
McConnell was arrested on June 16, 2012, on unrelated charges and identified as the man seen on the bank’s cameras. He pleaded guilty in July 2014 to one count of bank robbery.
McConnell has two prior federal bank robbery convictions, which will be taken into account during his sentencing. According to court documents, McConnell remains in federal custody and will be turned over to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility.
The investigation was handled by the FBI’s Charlotte Division, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, and the Gastonia Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Ellis of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Max O. Cogburn, Jr. McConnell will serve 138 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. All federal sentences are served without the possibility of parole.
Acting U.S. Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose praised the work of the FBI, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, and the Gastonia Police Department in bringing McConnell to justice.
The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of committing bank robbery and the importance of working together to keep communities safe.
