BEAUMONT, Texas – A hard-hitting sentence was meted out to Sterling Van Johnson, 43, a Beaumont drug dealer who has been sentenced to federal prison for a firearms violation. The Eastern District of Texas saw the act of justice unfold when Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs announced the sentencing.
Johnson, caught in the gritty web of drug trafficking, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone on July 29, 2025. The judgment was handed down under the stern gaze of justice.
According to court documents, Johnson was actively involved in drug trafficking activities in Beaumont. Undercover operations led to several controlled purchases of narcotics with Johnson. In September 2024, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a residence where Johnson sold drugs, uncovering various narcotics and two firearms. Johnson’s admission confirmed his intent to distribute the drugs and his use of the firearm in that criminal enterprise.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a relentless nationwide initiative aimed at eradicating cartels, transnational criminal organizations, illegal immigration, and violent crime from our communities. The Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) are pivotal in streamlining efforts to protect Americans.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with the Beaumont Police Department, conducted a thorough investigation that led to the successful prosecution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell James took the case through to its conclusion, ensuring justice was served for the community.
Johnson’s sentence sends a clear message that the illegal use of firearms in drug trafficking will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such activities face severe consequences. The grimy streets of Beaumont are one step closer to being free from the clutches of drug dealers like Johnson.
