ABERDEEN – In a gritty turn of events, United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell has announced the sentencing of Leslie Gerald Bobtail Bear, a 27-year-old resident of Little Eagle, South Dakota, for committing child abuse. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on September 15, 2025, mandates nine months in federal prison, two years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Bobtail Bear faced charges following an indictment by a federal grand jury in March 2024 and pleaded guilty on June 16, 2025. The abuse, which led to the child’s emergency hospitalization, occurred between May 12, 2023, and November 21, 2024, within Corson County, South Dakota, and the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation.
This harrowing case was prosecuted under the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute that allows certain crimes occurring in Indian country to be tried in federal court. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem leading the prosecution.
Bobtail Bear has been immediately remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, ensuring justice is served for the innocent victim and their family.
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell commented on the severity of the crime, stating, ‘This sentence sends a strong message that child abuse will not be tolerated in our community.’ The community of Little Eagle has expressed relief at the outcome and hopes for a full recovery for the child involved.
