BOZEMAN – In a chilling admission, Rex Wu, Jr., 23, of Bozeman, pleaded guilty to cyberstalking charges yesterday after being accused of sending threatening emails to a student at Montana State University (MSU). According to U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme, Wu faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
The defendant’s guilty plea came before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kathleen L. DeSoto, who will now await the determination of any sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Dana L. Christensen. Wu is set to be sentenced on November 6, 2025, after his conditional release pending further legal proceedings.
The FBI and MSU Police Department were alerted by a student receiving racially charged threats in February 2023. The emails, sent from multiple accounts, included death threats against the student and her affiliated campus group. Wu was apprehended following a meticulous investigation that linked him to the offending IP address and online activities.
During an interview on February 27, 2025, FBI agents confirmed Wu’s admission of sending the harassing emails. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Starnes handled the prosecution, while the FBI and MSU Campus Police led the joint investigation.
