In a disturbing case of child abuse, 21-year-old Braeden McLean of Ideal, South Dakota, has been sentenced for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl in Tripp County.
The crime, which occurred in March 2023, was reported to the Winner Police Department by the victim’s family, who had become aware of the relationship.
McLean was indicted by a federal grand jury in May 2023 and pleaded guilty on September 14, 2023. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office due to the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, which mandates that certain violent crimes committed in Indian Country be prosecuted in federal court.
The investigation was conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Winner Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson handling the prosecution.
McLean was sentenced to all time served through January 17, 2024, totaling approximately 10 months in custody. He was also ordered to serve five years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
As part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative, a nationwide effort to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse, McLean’s case is a stark reminder of the dangers facing children in our communities.
McLean was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, bringing an end to a disturbing chapter in the lives of the victim and her family.
