GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Calvin M. Eriksen, a 47-year-old surgeon from Brookfield, Wisconsin, has been hit with federal charges for distributing child pornography, sources from the Department of Justice revealed.
Eriksen stands accused under Title 18, United States Code, Sections 2252A(a)(2)(A) and 2252A(b)(1), which carry a mandatory minimum sentence of five years to a maximum of twenty years in prison. The Brookfield surgeon could also be slammed with a fine upwards of $250,000 and forced to register as a sex offender under both state and federal laws.
This grim case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2006 to tackle the escalating issue of child sexual exploitation online. The program brings together federal, state, and local agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children via the Internet.
Homeland Security Investigations offices in Milwaukee and West Palm Beach, along with the City of Brookfield Police Department, conducted the investigation that led to Eriksen’s arrest. Assistant United States Attorney Megan J. Thomas will be handling the prosecution.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely a charge and does not constitute evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
