Buffalo Grandmother Sentenced 10 Years for Running Family Drug Empire
A Buffalo grandmother is facing a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to running a family drug organization that distributed crack cocaine in the city.
BUFFALO, N.Y.– Theresa Anderson, 56, of Buffalo, N.Y. was sentenced to 10 years in prison, a maximum of life and a $8,000,000 fine for her role in a massive crack cocaine distribution ring.
Anderson, who headed an illegal narcotics trafficking organization, employed several family members to sell crack cocaine on a daily basis in the City of Buffalo’s Swinburne and Deshler Streets neighborhoods.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa Marangola stated that the defendant used intimidation and violence to control the area’s narcotics sales, even purchasing several homes in the neighborhood to store and sell the illicit substances.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. praised the efforts of law enforcement and the community in taking down the organization, saying "Just as Theresa Anderson and her family targeted and held a city neighborhood hostage, our Office, along with our law enforcement partners will continue to target any individual or groups of individuals who would consider similar behavior."
Anderson’s husband, Steven Butler, and several other family members were also arrested and charged in connection to the case. Five of the defendants are either children or grandchildren of Anderson, and another is her husband.
The case was a result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Buffalo Police Department, and the New York State Police.
Anderson is the fourth defendant to be convicted in the case, with sentencing scheduled for October 8, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. before Judge Richard J. Arcara.
