Meth Trafficking Conviction Lands Eagle Butte Man in Prison

A notorious meth trafficker has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison after a lengthy investigation by local and federal authorities. Calvin Donald Edwards, Jr., a 41-year-old resident of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, was convicted of Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.

According to court documents, Edwards knowingly and intentionally possessed with intent to distribute approximately 39 grams of methamphetamine in Eagle Butte on July 1, 2019. The conviction stemmed from an indictment by a federal grand jury on January 14, 2020, and Edwards subsequently pled guilty on February 10, 2020.

Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence on May 4, 2020. Edwards was also ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100 and serve 3 years of supervised release following his release from prison.

The investigation into Edwards’ activities was a collaborative effort between the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook prosecuted the case, bringing Edwards to justice for his crimes.

Edwards was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing. The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that await those who engage in meth trafficking and other forms of organized crime.
