A 33-year-old Jefferson City man, Nathan Robert Kent, has been charged with producing and distributing child pornography after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led to a search of his residence. The investigation, which involved the Boone County Sheriff and Jefferson City Police Department, uncovered evidence that Kent was using social media and encrypted apps to entice minor females to produce child porn. He also sent files depicting child sexual abuse material to multiple users and possessed over a thousand such files.
The charges against Kent include three counts of production of child pornography, two counts of distribution of child pornography, and possession of child pornography. If convicted, he faces up to 140 years in federal prison without parole.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley S. Turner.
Kent’s alleged crimes were uncovered after a Cyber tip from Snapchat was received by the NCMEC, which led to the execution of a search warrant on his residence. A forensic examination of his electronic devices revealed the extent of his involvement in child pornography.
The case will proceed to trial, where evidence will be presented to a federal jury to determine Kent’s guilt or innocence. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.
