Child Porn Distributor Sentenced to 30 Years

Peoria, IL – In a shocking case of child exploitation, 24-year-old Jacob T. Burmood has pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography. Burmood, a registered sex offender, entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Michael M. Mihm, pursuant to a plea agreement that includes a stipulated sentence of 360 months in federal prison.

Burmood’s guilty plea comes after a lengthy investigation by the Peoria Police Department, in partnership with the Illinois Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) taskforce and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The investigation, which began in October 2015, revealed that Burmood possessed over 3,000 images and 200 video files of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct with other minors and adults.

According to court documents, on October 14, 2015, Peoria police officers executed search warrants on Burmood’s person, his residence, and various computers and electronic media. A subsequent forensic analysis of Burmood’s computer showed that he distributed child pornography to others using an email account.

Burmood’s prior conviction for a sex crime in Illinois in 2011 landed him on the state’s sex offender registry. He has remained in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service since his arrest on October 16, 2015.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Hanna is prosecuting the case, which is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children online, as well as identify and rescue victims.

Burmood’s sentencing is scheduled for May 27, 2016. His conviction serves as a warning to those who would engage in the exploitation and distribution of child pornography, and highlights the importance of continued efforts to combat this heinous crime.

As part of the investigation, authorities seized numerous pieces of evidence, including computers and electronic media. The case is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child exploitation and the importance of continued vigilance in protecting our children from predators like Burmood.
