Urbana Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Child Pornography Offenses

An Urbana man has been ordered to serve 25 years in prison for distributing, receiving, and possessing child pornography, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Lewis, Central District of Illinois. Shannon Logan, 35, of the 1400 block of Scovill St., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Colin S. Bruce.

According to the indictment, Logan engaged in a pattern of sexual abuse of a minor. The court found that Logan had distributed, received, and possessed child pornography, and ordered him to serve the statutory maximum sentence of 240 months (20 years) in prison for count one of the indictment, distribution of child pornography. In addition, Logan was ordered to serve 120 months (10 years) in prison for possession of child pornography and 240 months (20 years) for receipt of child pornography, with 60 months (five years) to be served consecutive to the imposed sentence.

Logan had pleaded guilty on October 2, 2014, to trading images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct via the internet and retaining the images and videos on computer storage devices. He had remained in the custody of law enforcement since his arrest on May 30, 2014, on state child pornography charges.

The charges were investigated by the Urbana Police Department and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elly Peirson in cooperation with the office of Champaign County State Attorney Julia Rietz.

Logan’s sentence also includes registration as a sex offender for natural life and supervised release for an additional 30 years following completion of his prison sentence. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. The initiative was launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS).
