Daniel Scharmer, a 50-year-old Niles man, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for downloading and sharing thousands of child pornography files. Scharmer, a previously convicted sex offender, pleaded guilty in April to receipt and distribution of visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct and possession of child pornography. The crimes occurred between October 2022 and January 2025, with Scharmer identified as one of the top three child pornography downloaders in Ohio in October 2024.

Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Scharmer’s residence in June 2024, seizing electronic devices including desktop computers, hard disk drives, and laptops. Investigators found over 32,000 files containing child sexual abuse materials, including sadism and masochism and videos of children engaged in sex acts.

Scharmer was also ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release after imprisonment and pay $71,500 in restitution to victims and $10,000 toward the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act. This case was investigated by the FBI Youngstown Resident Agency and the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.

Scharmer’s history of related criminal activity includes a 2019 conviction in Trumbull County for pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and illegal use of a minor in a nudity-oriented material or performance.
