Child Predator Sentenced to 25 Years
A shocking case of child exploitation has come to a close in Philadelphia, where a New Jersey man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for producing child pornography using a minor.
Patrick Mergen, 40, of Sewell, New Jersey, had pleaded guilty to the charges on November 20, 2012, and was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg. The guilty plea and subsequent sentence mark a major victory for law enforcement in the fight against child exploitation.
According to investigators, Mergen used a child to produce child pornography, a heinous crime that has left many in the community reeling. The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael Levy.
The sentence handed down by Judge Goldberg not only includes the 25 years in prison, but also 10 years of supervised release, computer monitoring, and a ban on unsupervised contact with minors. Mergen will also undergo sex counseling as part of his sentence.
