Christopher DeKruif, Child Exploitation, Michigan 2024

A 28-year-old New Jersey resident has been handed a 35-year prison sentence for his role in a heinous child exploitation scheme.

Christopher DeKruif, a resident of New Jersey, was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of children.

The sentencing took place in Flint, Michigan, before United States District Judge Laurie Michelson.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, DeKruif began an online relationship with a minor female in 2012. He coerced her into photographing explicit sexual acts and threatened to disseminate explicit photographs of the victim and her cousin if she did not comply.

DeKruif’s actions were uncovered after an extensive multi-jurisdictional FBI investigation, which began in Flint, Michigan. He was identified and arrested in New Jersey, and subsequently transferred back to Michigan to face charges.

The 35-year sentence saves at least nine victims from having to appear and testify in DeKruif’s presence.

United States Attorney Barbara L. McQuade emphasized the importance of reporting online predators to the authorities. ‘It is essential that victims report to police when they are extorted by online predators,’ she said. ‘Parents should tell their children they should never be too ashamed to tell them when they are in trouble and need help.’

Special Agent in Charge David P. Gelios, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Detroit Division, praised the bravery of the victims who came forward to report DeKruif’s crimes.
