Clay Anthony Robertson, Cocaine Trafficking, LA 2024

St. Martinville man Clay Anthony Robertson, 31, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 60 months for trafficking over 500 grams of cocaine and possessing firearms as a convicted felon. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote, marks the end of a drug-fueled run that collapsed during a January 2017 raid in Lafayette.

Robertson pleaded guilty on October 23, 2017, to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of firearms by a convicted felon. In addition to the five-year prison term, he will serve four years of supervised release upon his release. The charges stem from a coordinated takedown led by federal and local narcotics units targeting high-level drug activity in Acadiana.

Law enforcement agents raided Robertson’s former apartment on January 19, 2017, uncovering a stash that included more than 500 grams of cocaine, 31 grams of marijuana laced with THC wax, and $64,280 in cash—likely proceeds from drug sales. The haul signaled a major distribution operation run from a modest residential unit, further evidence of the deep-rooted drug trade in southern Louisiana.

Agents also seized two loaded firearms: a .40 caliber pistol and a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, along with 71 rounds of live ammunition. Forensic checks revealed the .40 caliber weapon had been reported stolen—a detail that added federal theft charges into the mix. Robertson’s prior felony drug conviction barred him from legally possessing any firearm, making the discovery a key factor in the federal prosecution.

The investigation was a joint effort by the DEA, ATF, Lafayette Metro Narcotics Task Force, and the St. Martin Parish Narcotics Division of the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office. The collaboration underscores the aggressive multi-agency push to dismantle drug networks operating across parish lines with armed protection.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. McCoy prosecuted the case, securing a sentence that reflects the severity of Robertson’s offenses. With over half a kilo of cocaine and illegal weapons in play, federal authorities are treating the case as a textbook example of the dangerous intersection between drug trafficking and armed criminal enterprise.
