Dakota Mitchell, Gun Trafficking Conspiracy, Missouri 2023

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – In a grim turn of events, 21-year-old Dakota Mitchell from Clever, Mo., pleaded guilty in federal court today to an array of firearms-related offenses. The young man admitted to conspiring with a straw purchaser to obtain four firearms, knowing full well that he was prohibited from owning them due to his status as an unlawful user of controlled substances.

Mitchell, who has been linked to the gang ‘FTO,’ which is notorious for violent crimes and firearm offenses, unlawfully possessed six Glock pistols and a Micro Draco pistol between April 28, 2023, and July 9, 2024. His criminal activities were exposed during several high-profile incidents in Missouri.

In May 2023, Mitchell was caught on tape engaging in road rage and firing at a vehicle that had stopped short at an intersection. Greene County Sheriff’s Office detectives responded to the scene and seized two firearms from Mitchell’s SUV. Later that year, Springfield Police Department officers intercepted him at the site of another car accident, where they found a loaded Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

On April 11, 2024, Ozark School Resource officers recovered a Glock 9mm pistol in school parking lot that was traced back to Mitchell. Less than two months later, on July 9, he was arrested for vandalism and found in possession of another Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Mitchell confessed during his post-Miranda interview that he had been using marijuana daily since the age of 11 or 12 and occasionally used other drugs. He claimed that his straw purchaser had bought multiple firearms on his behalf, including the ones seized in the incidents mentioned above. Under federal statutes, Mitchell is facing up to 15 years in federal prison without parole on each conviction.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie L. Wan and investigated by multiple law enforcement agencies. This incident underscores the ongoing efforts of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) to combat violent crime and gun violence, ensuring safer neighborhoods for all residents.
