Counterfeit Currency Ring Busted in Post Falls
A California man has been sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for dealing in counterfeit obligations in Post Falls, Idaho.
Clinton Curry, 40, of San Francisco, California, was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for his role in a counterfeit currency scheme.
According to court records, Curry purchased $324 of goods from a store in Post Falls using U.S. currency on September 9, 2023. The majority of the currency used during the purchase was discovered to be counterfeit.
Investigations revealed that Curry had engaged in similar transactions across several western and southern states, including Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Oklahoma, and Texas. A total of 46 separate incidents were discovered, with Curry using or attempting to use over $40,000 in counterfeit currency.
Curry was ordered to pay restitution to the businesses he defrauded and will be required to serve an additional three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison sentence.
U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, stating, "This case demonstrates the effectiveness of multi-agency coordination to remove those who would attempt to threaten our financial system by using counterfeit currency."
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryce Ellsworth prosecuted the case, which involved close collaboration between the Spokane Office of the U.S. Secret Service and the Post Falls Police Department.
