Black Hawk Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Illegal Possession of Firearms
Cole Younger, a 33-year-old man from Black Hawk, South Dakota, has been sentenced to federal prison for illegally possessing firearms. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Younger was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
On May 2, 2022, Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence. The conviction stems from Younger’s illegal possession of a loaded SCCY Industries, model CPX-2, 9x19mm Luger caliber, semi-automatic pistol, which was found after he came into contact with law enforcement in Rapid City in June 2021.
Younger had previously been convicted of a felony, making him prohibited from possessing firearms. Despite this, he was found to be in possession of the loaded pistol, leading to his arrest and indictment by a federal grand jury on August 19, 2021. He pleaded guilty to the charges on December 3, 2021.
Younger was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after the sentencing.
The investigation into Younger’s case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through a combination of enforcement efforts and community-based prevention programs. PSN focuses on identifying and addressing the most pressing violent crime problems in communities and developing comprehensive solutions to address them.
