COLUMBIA, S.C. — A grim reminder of the consequences of illegal gun possession as Willie Roger Davis, 35, from Columbia, faces a five-year federal prison sentence for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Davis’ fall from grace began when Columbia Police Department officers stopped a rental moving truck that was flagged by its owner. The suspect, who had prior convictions for armed robbery, strong arm robbery, and burglary, exited the vehicle’s driver’s seat and walked toward officers with an air of innocence. However, the truth was soon laid bare as officers discovered a .357 revolver tucked away in his pants pocket. Davis confessed to obtaining the weapon from a family member.
United States District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis did not mince words, sentencing Davis to 60 months imprisonment followed by a three-year term of court-ordered supervision. There is no parole in the federal system for this despicable crime.
This sentence comes under the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which unites all levels of law enforcement with communities to tackle violent crime and gun violence. The program’s recent launch on May 26, 2021, focused on fostering community trust, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
The investigation into Davis’ firearm offense was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Columbia Police Department. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Sanford led the prosecution of this case.
As the grim tale of Willie Roger Davis unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder that those who flout the law will face the full might of the federal justice system.
