JACKSON, MS – In a stunning revelation that shakes the integrity of the Medicaid system, five convenience store owners and their families from Jackson, Mississippi have agreed to pay a total of $173,627 to settle allegations of fraudulent Medicaid claims.
Patrick A. Lemon, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, announced that Rajwinder Kaur, Kawaldeep Singh, Narinder Kaur, Prabhdeep Momi, Bobby Babber, Priyalpreet Babber, Gurinder Babber, Mehaknoor Babber, and Navdeep Basra are at the center of this financial chicanery. These individuals, who held various positions in convenience stores, gas stations, and restaurants, falsely reported minimal income to qualify for Medicaid benefits.
Their fraudulent actions led to the Mississippi Division of Medicaid (MDOM) paying out health care coverage benefits they were not entitled to. This siphoning off of funds was aimed at enriching themselves rather than supporting those truly in need, as Medicaid is intended to assist low-income individuals and families.
Special Agent in Charge Kelly Blackmon of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General emphasized the severity of such crimes, stating that fraudulent Medicaid benefits divert funds meant for legitimate enrollees like the elderly and disabled. HHS-OIG remains committed to investigating such fraud schemes to safeguard this vital program.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Deidre Colson and Keesha Middleton handling the legal proceedings for the Southern District of Mississippi.
This is a stark reminder that even in the shadowy corners of financial crime, justice will ultimately prevail. As these individuals pay their debt to society, they also serve as a cautionary tale for others who might be tempted to take advantage of this vital program.
