Counterfeiter and Gunman Behind Bars
Abraham Lewis Addison, a 27-year-old Akron man, has been indicted on five counts of uttering and dealing in counterfeit obligations or securities and one count of possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
The indictment, announced by Acting U.S. Attorney David A. Sierleja, stems from an incident on September 9, 2016, in which Addison was found to be in possession of approximately $2,450 in counterfeit currency in the form of fake $50 and $20 bills, as well as a Ruger 9mm semiautomatic pistol with an obliterated serial number.
The case was investigated by a collaborative effort of local law enforcement agencies, including the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Akron Police Department, Ohio Highway Patrol, Bath Police Department, and the United States Secret Service.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Teresa Riley will be prosecuting the case, which is now set for trial. If convicted, Addison’s sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, if any, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violations.
The court will take into account the defendant’s prior record, role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violations when determining the sentence. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum, and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.
It is essential to note that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial, where it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen what additional information will come to light. One thing is certain, however: Addison’s alleged crimes have serious consequences, and the law will be seeking justice.
