D.C. Felon Smith Busted with Loaded Glock

WASHINGTON – David Oday Smith, 39, of the District of Columbia, is facing federal charges after a foot chase and discovery of a loaded handgun in Northwest D.C. on July 14, 2025. Smith, a convicted felon, is alleged to have been illegally carrying a Glock 27 .40 caliber pistol, a violation that adds to a lengthy criminal history.

The arrest unfolded on the 5700 block of Georgia Avenue Northwest when officers from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fourth District Crime Suppression Team spotted Smith attempting to conceal himself behind a bus stop, clutching a black satchel. According to court documents, when officers moved to investigate, Smith bolted, ditching the bag in his attempt to evade capture. A search of the discarded satchel revealed the loaded firearm – one .40 caliber round in the chamber, with 14 more in the magazine.

Smith is now charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon. This isn’t his first brush with the law. Records show Smith was convicted of second-degree murder in Prince George’s County, Maryland, in 2009, a conviction that already prohibited him from owning or possessing firearms. Why he was risking another felony is a question for the courtroom.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, alongside Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), announced the indictment today. The case is being prosecuted as part of the “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful” initiative, a program directly tied to President Trump’s executive order to address crime in the nation’s capital.

“Make D.C. Safe Again,” as the initiative is branded, aims to aggressively target gun violence, prioritize federal firearms violations, and push for harsher penalties and pre-trial detention for those accused of such crimes. The ATF Washington Field Office and MPD are jointly investigating the case, with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney David B. Liss handling the prosecution. Case number: 25cr207.

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is simply an accusation. Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But with a prior murder conviction and a loaded handgun in his possession, the stakes are undeniably high. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments.
