Defendant Sentenced to 21 Months in Prison for Child Exploitation in Portland ME
A Canton man, Dale Carr, 52, was sentenced to 21 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for attempting to transfer obscene material to a minor, according to a recent court ruling in U.S. District Court in Portland.
Carr pleaded guilty on January 24, 2023, to the charges against him. The investigation into Carr’s activities began in September 2019, when he started chatting with an undercover FBI agent posing as a 13-year-old girl in an online chatroom designed for children aged 16 and under.
Over the course of several weeks, Carr repeatedly asked the undercover agent for sexually explicit photos and expressed an interest in having sex with her, according to court records. In October 2019, he sent the undercover agent a close-up photograph of his penis.
The FBI investigated the case and worked to bring Carr to justice for his crimes. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the U.S. government.
Online enticement is a growing problem, with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) reporting a 97.5% increase in online enticement reports between 2019 and 2020. This type of victimization takes place across every platform, including social media, messaging apps, gaming platforms, and more.
Carr’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of child exploitation crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as necessary.
