DETROIT — Victor Hernandez, the notorious leader of a dark web drug trafficking ring, was today sentenced to 130 months in federal prison for orchestrating sales of cocaine and counterfeit pills over the internet. The announcement came from United States Attorney Dawn N. Ison, who emphasized the severity of the crime and the impact on local communities.
Hernandez, aged 31 and a resident of Detroit, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute illicit substances, conspiracy to launder monetary instruments, distribution of counterfeit pills, and using firearms in furtherance of his criminal activities. U.S. District Judge Linda V. Parker handed down the sentence, which also included a $3.1 million money judgment for proceeds from Hernandez’s crimes.
Joining Ison at the announcement were Jared Murphy, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Detroit, Andrew P. Lawton of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Angelo Horiates III of IRS Criminal Investigation (CI). They highlighted the collaborative effort that led to Hernandez’s capture.
The case began when federal investigators traced the dark web vendor site known as “opiateconnect” back to Hernandez. A search warrant at his Detroit residence revealed a clandestine drug lab with the capacity to produce thousands of pills per hour, alongside firearms and substantial quantities of cocaine and counterfeit alprazolam pills.
“Today’s sentence underscores the danger posed by the armed distribution of controlled substances,” said Ison. “Hernandez thought he could evade justice in the shadows of the dark web, but our investigators brought him to light.”
Murphy echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to dismantling online marketplaces that threaten Michigan communities. DEA’s Lawton highlighted the importance of financial disruption in combating drug trafficking organizations, while Horiates III emphasized IRS CI’s role in following the money trail.
