DES MOINES, Iowa – In a relentless fight against prescription drug abuse and theft, the Des Moines Resident Office of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is set to host its 17th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Scheduled for Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., this initiative offers Iowans an opportunity to rid their homes of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
The DEA will not accept liquids, needles, or sharps, but it’s all hands on deck for pills and patches. The service is free and anonymous – no questions asked, just a safe disposal solution.
This Saturday, the DEA will be joined by nearly 5,000 partner law enforcement agencies at approximately 6,000 collection sites across the state. To find the nearest site, visit www.DEATakeBack.com or call 800-882-9539.
Just last October, Americans turned in an astonishing 457 tons of prescription drugs at nearly 5,800 DEA and partner-operated sites. Since the program’s inception, the DEA has collected a total of nearly 11 million pounds of medication from previous Take Back Day events.
The high rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S., along with the rising number of accidental poisonings and overdoses, are causes for concern. Many abusers admit obtaining their drugs freely from family and friends, often from the very medicine cabinets where these events begin.
