Delano Antwuan Deshazer, a 34-year-old convicted felon from Chicago, Illinois, has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for his role in selling a firearm to a confidential informant in Dubuque, Iowa.
The case against Deshazer began in February 2020, when he sold a firearm to a confidential informant. This act was in direct violation of Deshazer’s status as a convicted felon, who is prohibited from possessing a firearm. Deshazer’s extensive criminal history includes over 30 different convictions, including felony convictions for eluding and escape, as well as four prior convictions for domestic abuse.
On March 8, 2021, Deshazer pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon. He was subsequently sentenced to 84 months in federal prison by United States District Court Judge C.J. William in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
As part of his sentence, Deshazer will also serve a three-year term of supervised release after his prison term. There is no parole available in the federal system. Deshazer is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case against Deshazer was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through a combination of law enforcement efforts and community-based prevention and reentry programs.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Nydle and investigated by the Dubuque Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
