ST. LOUIS – Dylan James, a 25-year-old resident of DeSoto, Missouri, has admitted to a sickening pattern of sexual exploitation, pleading guilty Thursday to federal charges of producing and distributing child pornography. The case, a grim reminder of the predators lurking in our communities, details James’s abuse of three victims, ranging in age from 13 to 16.
According to court documents, James pleaded guilty to one count of production of child pornography and one count of distribution of child pornography. The depravity began in 2024 when James recorded a sexual act with a 13-year-old girl. He didn’t stop there; he then distributed that recording, furthering the abuse and trauma inflicted upon the victim.
Investigators, digging deeper into James’s digital footprint, uncovered evidence of two additional victims. A 15-year-old girl told authorities James plied her with alcohol and “possibly some vapes” in exchange for sexually explicit images. The exploitation didn’t end with photos. James also targeted a 16-year-old, watching a livestream of her engaging in sexual acts with her boyfriend before paying her for additional videos, according to his plea agreement. The details are a chilling illustration of calculated grooming and financial coercion.
James now faces a grim reckoning. He is scheduled to be sentenced on December 2. The production charge carries a mandatory minimum prison term of 15 years – a sentence that barely begins to address the damage he’s caused. The distribution charge adds another 5 to 20 years to his potential sentence, meaning James could spend decades behind bars. This isn’t about rehabilitation; it’s about accountability and protecting other vulnerable children.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, led by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Louis County Police Department, and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Hayes is prosecuting the case, ensuring James faces the full weight of the law. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation.
Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals like James, while also working to identify and rescue victims. If you suspect child exploitation, report it immediately. Information about Project Safe Childhood can be found at www.justice.gov/psc. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing of Dylan James.
