Darren S. O’Dell, Child Pornography Receipt and Possession, MO 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An Independence, Mo., man was sentenced to seven years without parole in federal court for receiving and possessing child pornography.

According to authorities, Darren S. O’Dell, 47, pleaded guilty on Jan. 19, 2017, to one count of receiving child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography.

The court documents reveal that a state trooper monitoring online activity in September 2015 discovered O’Dell had made child pornography available over a peer-to-peer file-sharing network. A subsequent search warrant at his residence yielded two desktop computers, a laptop computer, and an external hard drive containing over 27,000 images and 350 videos of child pornography.

Most of the content depicted children under 12, including scenes of adult/toddle rape and prepubescent children in bondage. O’Dell admitted to downloading child pornography for several years. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs to seven years in federal prison without parole and ordered to pay $18,000 in restitution to 17 identified victims.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David A. Barnes and investigated by the Independence, Mo., Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. It is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative combating child sexual exploitation and abuse.
