Detroit Pill Dealer Sentenced to 4 Years for Oxycodone and Alprazolam Sales

Huntington, W.Va. – A Detroit man has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for selling painkillers in West Virginia, officials announced Friday.

Derrick Bernard Pritchett, 32, pleaded guilty to distributing oxycodone and alprazolam, a type of painkiller and anti-anxiety medication. The illicit sales took place in Huntington, West Virginia.

According to court documents, Pritchett met a confidential informant on the 1200 block of Jackson Avenue in Huntington on August 10, 2015, and sold them nine 30 mg oxycodone pills and one 2 mg alprazolam pill.

The investigation into Pritchett’s activities was conducted by the DEA Task Force, and Assistant United States Attorney Joseph F. Adams handled the prosecution. Chief United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers imposed the four-year sentence.

This case is part of an ongoing effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin in the region.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, joined by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open-air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin in communities across the Southern District.

Pritchett’s sentence is the latest in a series of high-profile cases targeting prescription drug traffickers in West Virginia. The state has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic, with overdose deaths continuing to rise in recent years.
