Steven Dettelbach, Heroin Combat Efforts, Ohio 2014

The gritty streets of Cuyahoga County were illuminated by compassion and dedication on Monday, May 19, 2014, as the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board honored several key figures in the fight against the heroin epidemic. Leading the pack was U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach, whose relentless pursuit to end the crisis in Northeast Ohio was recognized with a prestigious award.

Harvey A. Snider, Esq., Board Chair of ADAMHS, praised the honorees, ‘Their extraordinary contributions are helping children and adults with mental illness and addictions on their path to recovery.’ The event at the Annual Meeting, attended by nearly 350 guests, celebrated those who are alleviating the stigma associated with mental health and addiction.

William M. Denihan, CEO of ADAMHS, echoed Snider’s sentiment, ‘The actions of each of our recipients are helping to alleviate the stigma that is still too often associated with mental illness and addictions.’ Among the award recipients were Dennis Madden of Stella Maris for his leadership in addiction treatment and Barb Obiaya of Achievement Centers for Children for her years of service in mental health.

Dettelbach was specifically honored for his remarkable leadership, partnership with public systems, and commitment to the Defending Childhood project. Wally Clevenger, a volunteer who aids recovering heroin addicts, and Rev. Dr. Howard Pippin, Jr., were also recognized for their contributions to community mental health.

Other notable awards included Urban Goodness, a farming project operated by individuals with mental illness or substance abuse issues, and Rob Brandt of Robby’s Voice, who developed a prevention program following the tragic heroin overdose of his son. Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman and State Representative Nickie Antonio were honored as Legislators of the Year for their advocacy.
