Devonte West Charged with Heroin Possession, Louisiana

A Hammond man has been indicted on serious charges following a violent incident at his residence. Devonte West, 21, of Hammond, faces one count of possession with intent to distribute a quantity of heroin and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The charges stem from a February 20, 2017, shooting in front of West’s residence. According to court documents, West and his cousin, Maurice Lloyd, Jr., were victims of the shooting after they completed a drug transaction. Tragically, Lloyd was fatally wounded in the incident.

A search of West’s residence following the shooting revealed approximately two ounces of heroin, some Roxicodone pills, and multiple firearms. Further investigation led to the recovery of additional heroin that West attempted to discard prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

For the drug possession count, West faces a maximum term of twenty years imprisonment and a fine of $1,000,000. The gun possession count carries a minimum sentence of five years imprisonment to run consecutive to any other sentence imposed.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite praised the work of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Andre’ Jones is in charge of the prosecution.

While the indictment serves as an allegation, the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The prosecution will work diligently to ensure justice is served in this case.

Devonte West’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of heroin trafficking and gun violence. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
