PORTLAND, Maine:
A shocking case of Social Security fraud has come to light in Lewiston, Maine, with a local woman sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay $90,674 in restitution.
Donna Desrosiers, 62, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen after pleading guilty to the crime on October 21, 2024.
According to court records, Desrosiers began receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in 2003. At that time, she was informed that she was required to report any changes in her household composition, income, or resources. However, despite receiving multiple reminders, Desrosiers failed to disclose that her husband was part of her household or that he contributed any income.
The investigation revealed that Desrosiers and her husband deposited their funds into a joint bank account, with the couple claiming they had not lived together since 2003. However, during an interview with investigators in October 2022, Desrosiers admitted that her husband lived with her and stayed at her apartment at least part of each month for the previous 11 years.
When asked what would have happened if she had reported the presence of her husband in her household, Desrosiers responded, “They would probably take my check.” From 2011 to 2022, Desrosiers fraudulently collected approximately $90,674 in SSI benefits.
The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, who brought Desrosiers to justice for her egregious crime.
As a result of her actions, Desrosiers will be paying back the full amount of $90,674 in restitution, making it clear that those who commit Social Security fraud will be held accountable.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of honesty and transparency when it comes to government benefits.
