In a shocking case of financial deceit, a 62-year-old man from Douglasville, Georgia, pleaded guilty to swindling the Social Security Administration out of $39,124 in faked child insurance benefits.
Donald Hargrave, 62, of Douglasville, GA, admitted to receiving Title II Child Insurance Benefits from the Social Security Administration between May 2012 and July 2013 while living in Buffalo, New York.
According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr., Hargrave received a total of $39,124 to which he was not entitled. This staggering amount was meant to support his son, but instead, it lined Hargrave’s pockets.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott S. Allen Jr. stated that Hargrave’s actions were in direct violation of the law, and his office is committed to holding individuals accountable for their crimes.
The investigation into Hargrave’s actions was led by the Office of the Inspector General of the Social Security Administration, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Edward J. Ryan.
Hargrave’s plea carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. His sentencing is scheduled for July 1, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. before Senior U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and the consequences of financial dishonesty.
