Emanual Semon, a 24-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, was convicted of engaging in non-consensual sex with a juvenile female at a residence on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in July 2024. The incident occurred on the afternoon of July 3, 2024, when Semon, without the victim’s consent, began sexual activity that was only stopped when an adult intervened. The case was prosecuted in federal court due to the Major Crimes Act, which mandates that certain violent crimes in Indian country be handled at the federal level.
The jury delivered the guilty verdict on May 7, 2026, following a three-day trial in Rapid City, South Dakota. Semon now faces a maximum penalty of life in prison, a $250,000 fine, five years of supervised release, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, with Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson handling the prosecution. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The convictions highlight the ongoing efforts to protect minors from sexual abuse and to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. As Semon awaits sentencing, the outcome serves as a reminder of the severe consequences for those who engage in such heinous crimes.
