Eagle Butte Man Sentenced For Sexual Assault
A devastating case of child abuse has come to an end in South Dakota, where an Eagle Butte man has been sentenced for his heinous crimes.
Patrick Brown Thunder, 31, was convicted of one count of Sexual Assault of a Minor and one count of Sexual Abuse of a Person Incapable of Consenting. The crimes took place in two separate incidents in 2006 and 2008, both near Dupree, South Dakota.
According to investigators, the incidents involved Brown Thunder sexually assaulting young females under the age of 16. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson handled the prosecution of the case, which resulted in a harsh sentence for Brown Thunder. On March 18, 2013, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down a 240-month prison sentence for Brown Thunder, along with 5 years of supervised release and a $200 Special Assessment that will go towards the Victim Assistance Fund.
The harsh sentence is a testament to the gravity of Brown Thunder’s crimes. The victims, who were both under the age of 16 at the time of the assaults, have been left to deal with the long-term effects of their trauma. The investigation and prosecution of this case serve as a reminder that our justice system will not tolerate such heinous crimes.
Brown Thunder was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal to begin serving his sentence. It is our hope that this sentence will provide some measure of closure for the victims and their families.
The case is a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilant community members and law enforcement agencies working together to protect our most vulnerable citizens. In this instance, the bravery of the victims and the tireless efforts of the investigators and prosecutors brought a perpetrator to justice.
